Erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease, is a common, benign childhood illness caused by parvovirus B19. Presentation begins with a nonspecific prodrome (eg, malaise, congestion, cough, fever), followed by an erythematous rash on the cheeks after initial symptoms have resolved.
